50 Years A Dirt Forester
Always Outside and Never Behind a Desk
William Sargent, a life-long Vermonter, takes readers on a journey through his life. It begins with a small-town upbringing in Worcester, Vermont, and a two-room schoolhouse, and runs to the present day, where he is still advocating for the environment.
Along the way he tells a series of adventures and, in a few cases, what he calls misadventures. They are the ones that defined who he is.
In the spring of 2024, anti-hunting advocates were pushing a bill through the Vermont Legislature that would have changed the landscape of hunting in the state forever. Writing his testimony for the House Committee on Environment and Energy, Sargent described himself as fifty years a dirt forester and never a day behind a desk. A colleague read it and suggested he write a book. That one small act turned into a lifetime of encounters set down on paper.
It is the story of one man's determination to keep outside interest groups and lobbyists from dismantling long-held traditions in the Vermont hunting community, and it brings to life the experiences of a career spent in stewardship of the land.

Who it is for
Vermonters, first. Then anyone who hunts, works in the woods, sits on a conservation commission, or simply likes being outside and worries about what happens to the places that let them.
It has found readers among foresters and loggers, and among people who have never held a chainsaw in their lives.

Vermont Stories for Baby Boomers
Working title. The cover is with the same designers who made the first one.
The second book is a run of short stories about growing up in Vermont in the 1960s and 1970s. The subjects are the ones people of his generation will recognise immediately, and the ones that come up most often now that he has reached retirement.
Underneath the nostalgia it is a book about getting involved and making your voice heard across a small state.
The first chapter is called Inspiration. It opens with a song he heard in his senior year of high school, a warning about paving over paradise. He did not know at the time that he had just heard the reason he would get involved fifty years later.
